I’ve been capturing southwest Michigan landscapes of the natural world with my cameras and lenses for the last twenty-seven years. This book presents eighty-one landscapes captured within short driving distances from where I live a few miles east of Plainwell. The photographs are evenly distributed across all four seasons and from a variety of scenic locations.
The landscapes comprising this book were all taken from 2004-2011 with Nikon or Canon digital cameras and lenses. I’ve become familiar with my favorite landscape locations to the extent that when conditions are conducive to outstanding photography, I know where to be and when to be there to maximize the possibilities of memorable captures.
I’ve had the good fortune to travel across our country photographing in most of our national parks where the scenery is breathtaking. But I find as many memorable landscape images close to home as when I travel to far away places. I truly appreciate the ever changing, quiet beauty we have here in southwest Michigan.

The Colorado Plateau is a huge basin surrounded by highlands and filled with rocky outcroppings, mesas, and deep canyons. This geographical area includes southeastern Utah, northern Arizona, northwestern New Mexico, and western Colorado. It covers a land area of 130,000 square miles. It is my favorite location to photograph landscapes of the natural world.
The fifty-eight landscapes comprising this book were all taken from 2004-2011 with Nikon or Canon digital cameras and lenses. I’ve become familiar with my favorite landscape locations in the Colorado Plateau to the extent that I know where to be and when to be there to maximize the possibilities of memorable captures.
My favorite places to photograph are diverse and vary in their accessibility. They include: Zion, Bryce, and Grand Canyon National Parks, Coyote Buttes North, and Upper and Lower Antelope Slot Canyons. There are many more scenic locations in the Colorado Plateau, but my favorites included in this book are, in my opinion, the most photogenic. I’ve taken the liberty to include images from Valley of Fire State Park in Nevada to begin this book. It is not located in the Colorado Plateau but is nearby. Typically, when I visit this region, I fly into Las Vegas and then travel east to the Colorado Plateau passing by Valley of Fire. I believe this state park has a beauty comparable to the other places I’ve documented in this text.
The sculptured beauty and brilliant colors of the Colorado Plateau's sedimentary rock layers have captured my imagination and challenged my photographic skills for many years.
It’s my pleasure to share my imagery of this beautiful part of the United States with you.
